Resolution 1999-06: Adopted: Organized Blind Movement/ Membership Rights

February 20/21, 1999

Whereas, the accommodation of differences is the essence of true equality, and

Whereas, no one can truly understand what it is like to be blind unless he or she is blind, and

Whereas, only the blind have the right to decide the destiny of the blind, and

Whereas, the blind are the true experts regarding issues related to blindness, and

Whereas, this organization was formed by the blind and for those who are blind, and

Whereas, this organization is a minority group with the possibility of becoming controlled by a population base that is not blind, and

Whereas, the non-voting status of the sighted is not a detraction of the abilities of the sighted; rather, it is an acknowledgement of the ability and strength of the blind to govern and lead themselves, and to provide role models, direction, instruction, etc., to others who are blind,

Be it resolved that only members who are themselves legally blind shall have voting rights.

Be it further resolved that sighted persons accepted as members shall be designated non-voting members.

Be it further resolved that sighted members who wish to assist in carrying out NFB philosophy may serve on committees, etc., if the board is in agreement.
